Firm Profile
I am a magna cum laude graduate of Emory and Henry College with a concentration in Political Science and Philosophy. In 1970, I received an M.A. in Political Philosophy from The University of Chicago. After serving in the US Army, I graduated in 1975 from law school at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
In 1975, I joined the law firm of Mullins, Winston, and Robertson and in 1987, I formed my own law firm in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
Martindale-Hubbell lists me as having its highest "AV" rating and as being a member of the "Pre-eminent Lawyers" category. In 2001, I was awarded the honor of becoming a "Fellow of the American Bar Foundation"--an honor afforded to only one-third of one percent of eligible lawyers in any State.
Most of my clients have continued with me since my first representation of them: for example, VICC (Coastal) Coal Company, Penn Virginia Resources, Marty Corporation, Quesenberry Construction Company, People's Bank of Ewing, Coeburn-Norton-Wise Regional Waste Water Treatment Authority, Constitutional Officers across the Western part of Virginia such as sheriffs, deputies,, members of Electoral Boards, Treasurers, and Commissioners of Revenue. The good, everyday people of far Southwest Virginia are constantly my clients as well.
My most important quality as a lawyer is that I carefully listen to and take time with my clients. As as result, I can successfully represent and defend their interests.
